Fizul: on the way to the
break
18 year old Fizul Goni has big dreams. “I'm going to be an entrepreneur”, he explains. “Ten years from now I want to own a high class business in the financial services or marketing sector.” What's the first step in that direction? Selling Slivers.

Fizul joined the East London market after his college careers service arranged a presentation to students. Now he's racked up a record of [Bookings: 29, Hours Sold: 80, Buyers 13]. Those 13 employers have been a great grounding. “[Slivers] has been really good for my confidence” he says. “At first I was nervous because I hadn't worked before, but everything was easy”.

His best booking? Carrying out a survey one afternoon at a festival. “I liked talking to the people and I really had to think about what they were trying to say”. And the worst? “Sitting in an office doing data entry for a few hours”. But he adds: “it's important to do every booking well, it's all experience”.

Fizul's tip for new Slivers-of-Time sellers? “If you run out of credit on your phone make sure you can get to a PC to confirm your bookings”. And his future in the Slivers-of-Time market? “I want to stay doing this for a long time, but I need to be ready for my big break”.

SLIVERS FUTURES:
  The Digital Locality

Kevin: Bristol Champion

Around the country, a new kind of organisation is emerging. Digital Development Agencies are there to make sure local people and local businesses make the most of opportunities around the Internet. No surprise then that many of them are actively pushing the launch of a marketplace for Slivers-of-Time in their area.

At the forefront right now is Connecting Bristol, working with a range of public and private sector partners, including community charity Tomorrow's People. They're part of the Digital Challenge group, the DC10, who received funding from Central Government. They see Slivers for Bristol as something they could achieve relatively quickly. Project leader Kevin O'Malley explains “we see it as key to get Bristol Council as a launch buyer, after that other employers should be much easier to bring onboard”.

In July, the City's Council House was the venue for an event to launch Slivers to potential users. “We were delighted with the response, it was standing room only says Kevin. The Council Leader and several Councilors turned up. Now discussions are in place with several departments, to get a launch off the ground.

And Kevin's prediction for Slivers in Bristol? “Right now, I've no idea. My background is technology implementations. Slivers is so radical a social project, it could change people's lives. This is not about ones and zeroes.”

CASE STUDY:
  Up with the Junction

Business Junction is London's leading business referral network. They already organise 80 networking events each year, attended by 3,500 people. Business is booming and they want to expand.

Fiona Ross of Business Junction explains how they do it. “We target a new area where we would like to start business networking events. We prepare marketing materials, then we book Slivers-of-Time sellers to do the distribution”.

Once the materials are ready, a Business Junction member of staff meets the sellers at the postcode selected for the start of a 2 or 3 hour booking. Everyone is briefed and distribution is done in teams of two, one on each side of the street.

It's all going well. “I've been delighted with the calibre of sellers” says Fiona, “they're quick and on the ball!

Business Junction have more events planned for September, and they'll be relying on team Slivers to get the word out.
